WTA to Strengthen Cooperation with UNESCO & UNIDO

World Technopolis Association to Strengthen Cooperation

with UNESCO & UNIDO

In March, the WTA delegation led by Prof. Byung-Joo Kang, the Secretary-General of WTA, paid a visit to UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) based in Paris, France and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) in Vienna, Austria, to reinforce the cross-organizational collaborations between WTA and UN agencies.

At the meeting with Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng, the director of the UNESCO Division of Science Policy and Capacity-Building, discussed were the progress and the future directions of WTA-UN cooperative projects started since 2006. It was promised that there would be a strong partnership between UNESCO and WTA to support WTA-UN cooperative projects for sustainable development.

To further strengthen the WTA-UNESCO partnership, WTA discussed with Sabina Colombo and Marie-Claude Machon-Honoré at the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, how to upgrade its partnership status of UNESCO, from consultative status to associate status.

Since WTA became an official partner with UNESCO at the 174th Executive Board session of UNESCO in 2006, WTA has been managing international cooperative projects - Capacity Building Program, Technical Assistance, and Pilot Project - to support the sustainable growth of developing countries based on science, technology, and innovation.

There have been 11 technical supports in 10 countries, 14 International Training Workshops, and 9 Regional Training Workshops. Also, WTA has been promoting a culture of innovation ever since WTA, UNESCO, and Daejeon Metropolitan City first established Global Innovation Forum in 2014.

Concerning 2019 Global Innovation Forum and International U-W Training Workshop, which will be held in Daejeon this October, detailed discussions on the events programs were made with a program specialist at the UNESCO Division of Science Policy and Capacity-Building.

Leaving UNESCO, WTA visited UNIDO. At the meeting with Dr. Olga Memedovic of the UNIDO Department of Trade, Investment, and Innovation, WTA discussed how to build a partnership with UNIDO by sharing UNESCO-WTAs ongoing cooperative projects, WTAs main activities, and its achievements.

With this trip to build a strong partnership with UN agencies, WTA is expected to expand international exchange and cooperation opportunities for WTA members.
